The Nissan Foundation is awarding over $1.2 million to 44 non-profit organizations that support cross-cultural understanding as a means of encouraging acceptance and value of our differences. To date, the Foundation has given out as much money in a single grant cycle. Recipients of grants reside in areas that are close to Nissan plants in Atlanta, North Central New Jersey, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Southeast Michigan, Southern California, Middle Tennessee, and Central Mississippi.
“In the 32 years since the Nissan Foundation was created, it has helped organizations –big and small – develop and grow programming designed to increase understanding and acceptance of what makes us different,” says Chandra Vasser, President of the Nissan Foundation and Nissan’s first Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. “It’s an honor to uplift the important work of our grantees who are bettering our world by providing safe spaces to explore our similarities while celebrating our differences.”
Since its establishment in 1992, the Nissan Foundation has given more than 150 charity organizations awards totaling almost $17 million. In direct response to the civil turmoil that ensued after the Rodney King trial result, the Nissan Foundation was established. Nissan’s U.S. sales headquarters at the time was only a few blocks away from the epicenter of the incident. Mobile education initiatives, museums, historical sites, libraries, and other NGOs that highlight the numerous advantages that diversity offers to society are among the 2024 awardees. Every initiative that receives funding supports the Nissan Foundation’s goal of fostering a sense of community by appreciating cultural variety.
“I am thrilled that we’re able to further the innovative programming of 44 grantees this year,” said Ali Tonn, Nissan Foundation Executive Director. “These organizations are continually coming up with ways to reach new audiences and share the benefits of living and working together in a diverse society.”
One to World, situated in New York, is one of this year’s recipients. The Nissan Foundation provides support for the organization’s global classroom program, which involves international students sharing information about their home country and culture with elementary, middle, and high school students in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. It’s a relationship that benefits both parties.
Nashville’s Global Education Center is another recipient of a 2024 award, through its Passports to Understanding school outreach program, which includes concerts, museum exhibits, and plays, young people are exposed to a variety of cultural, ethnic, and religious groups. The program’s goal is to foster respect and understanding throughout cultures. The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum is the third recipient of a grant. Through its Upstander Speaker Series, it honors people and groups that defend human rights locally, nationally, or internationally.
