The Nissan brand honors its motorsports heritage with a special Safari Rally Z Tribute. The Safari Rally Z Tribute uses a replica Datsun 240z rally car built by Tommy Pike Customs for this year’s SEMA show. Nissan is celebrating decades of rally success, fans will find various Nissan concepts and production models on display at the SEMA show. The seventh-generation Nissan Z shows fans how it can transition from a normal street to an adventurous rally, the tribute vehicle pays homage to the Datsun 24Z rally car which won the 1971 East African Safari Rally.
Tommy Pike and his South Carolina based team have added many features to the Nissan Z to get it rally ready. The Safari Rally Z tribute received a tougher suspension, using a KW Safari suspension and NISMO parts to raise the vehicle by 2 inches that was needed in order to use 17 x 7.5-inch prototype NISMO Safari wheels paired to Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires. The Z features red and black exterior paint, NISMO and Yokohama decals and the number 23 on the side door.
Additionally the Safari Rally Z receives power twin enhancements including an AMS-tuned 400+ horsepower VR30DDTT engine combined with a cold air intake, carbon fiber cover, NISMO Track cat-back exhaust system, coolant expansion tank, heat exchanger, and a street twin-disc clutch and flywheel. Protecting the powertrain and chassis components is a new front bumper guard and skid plate, an assortment of NISMO off-Road LED lights for the dusty night conditions. The driver is protected by a custom roll bar with a 4-point harness and custom trimmed Recaro Pole Position seats.
In the past Nissan’s racing heritage would not be the same without driver Edgar Herrmann and navigator Hans Schüller. The two won first place in the 1971 East African Safari Rally which was 3,800-miles. The grueling rally was won in the #11 Datsun 240z race car for a second consecutive time, the year prior was won with a Datsun Bluebird 1600SSS. Nissan continues its racing tradition with its latest vehicles today. The 2023 Nissan Z offers the same excitement the automaker has offered for decades.
